Timescape by Gregory Benford

Timescape

The year is 1998; Benford envision a singular environmental disaster that threatens all life on Earth. What to do about it.. send a message back to 1962. Timescape tells the story of the scientists who struggle to send a warning message constrained by their knowledge of tachyons and limited resources; and the scientist in 1962 who has to deal with unexplainable noise in his experiment and then deal with an unclear message.

Benford does a good job of bringing the scientists and their families to life. He also has an ending that seemed believable- a rarity in Science Fiction. Timescape was the 1980 winner of the Nebula Award and the 1981 John W. Clark Award.

Timescape presents the subculture and world of scientists in microcosm: the lab, the loves, the grappling for grants, the pressures from university and government, the rewards and trials of relationships with spouses, the pressures of the scientific race, and the thrill of discovery. -Amazon
