The Last Policeman has an interesting concept: In six months an asteroid is going to hit the earth and end life as we know it. Hank Palace is promoted to his dream job: police detective in Concord NH. Most people quit their jobs and try to have fun or find meaning, so there are openings in the department.
Many people in Concord have commented suicide. Hank has to deal with the apparent suicide of Peter Zell. Maybe because it is his first big case or something doesn’t sit right. Hank can’t let it go and investigates it as a homicide. He follows the leads and things start to happen, but who can tell with all the craziness of last days.
Winter’s book reads as a murder mystery. This isn’t my forte, but I might read the sequel as it there are hints at the end of this book. Hints that suggest a bigger more interesting story.
My Kindle Notes From The Book
I would characterize the mood, here in town, as that of the child who isn’t in trouble yet, but knows he’s going to be. He’s up in his room, waiting, “Just wait till your father gets home.” He’s sullen and snappish, he’s on edge. Confused, sad, trembling against the knowledge of what’s coming next, and right on the edge of violence, not angry but anxious in a way that can easily shade into anger. – location 668-71
The director of Spiritual Services, in this time of desperation and wildness, has remained at his post, a trusted and constant figure, a rock. And he was, as of November, stealing vast quantities of medicine from the hospital pharmacy, from the nurses’ stations, from patients’ bedsides. MS Contin, Oxycontin, Oxytocin, Dilaudid, half-empty bags of liquid morphine. – location 3471-73
