Sound Man by Glyn Johns

Sound Man

Sound Man: A Life Recording Hits with The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles , Eric Clapton, The Faces

As a fan of LP liner notes, I was well aware of Glyn Johns. I couldn’t wait to read this book. Johns covers his long storied career as an engineer and producer. In some ways his career is too long. To cover his entire life in a 317 page book mean his has to gloss over a lot of important albums. “And then I recorded the Beatles for part of the “Abbey Road” album at Olympic.” Who else could write a sentence like that with no follow up? Only someone busy recording “Who’s Next” and “Let It Bleed” – that’s who. I can only hope Johns would consider writing detailed reviews of the albums he’s worked on. Some albums could (and have) covered an entire book(s). The book is well written and as a memoir of Johns’ life it’s pretty good. But as a Rock fan I was hoping for a little more about his work and his clients. Now, if we could get his brother Andy Johns to write a book.
