This sequel, To Obey: Isaac Asimov’s I Robot #2, is a medical drama that takes place in the near future. There is some science fiction, obviously a robot. The series is more of a thriller or mystery. It’s better if you don’t think of this as “I, Robot” as it seems completely divorced from Isaac Asimov. It’s better if you think of this Susan Calvin as a different person, because she reads different. She’s more of a Sherlock Holmes type and less the cold blooded scientist/engineer of the original. The book is still good and I’m enjoying the series, but as a medical thriller rather than science fiction.
Excerpts From My Kindle
Kendall cleared his throat and read: “Susan, the Three Laws are irreversibly intrinsic to the positronic brain. There is not, and has never been, a code to uncouple them.” He paused there, lips pursed, nodding. “My love for you has always been as clear and real as any father could have for his daughter. Never forget you were my everything.” – location 5414-5417
Susan spoke with exaggerated deliberateness, articulating every syllable. “B-X-2,” Even the hum of the air conditioner disappeared. Every ear locked on Susan’s voice. “8-T-J-6-3-F-F-R-1-0.” At random, she stopped. Scarface grinned. His weapon never wavered. “That’s the code, is it?” “It is,” Susan said. – location 5101-5104
