Some Luck by Jane Smiley

Some Luck

A saga of an all-American novel, Some Luck traces an Iowa farm family from 1920 to 1953.  The Langdon family  is captivating, each with their own personality and ambitions that take them either far from home or firmly cement them to the land they were born on.

It was a bit slow to start, but once the oldest son Frank starts coming of age, the narrative flows seamlessly.  There are so many fascinating aspects of history that are reflected in the direction of this novel: the Great Depression, technological innovation, education, migration and war.  Jane Smiley does an excellent job with character development and as a reader, I was taken with the whole family.  Wonderful novel!
