The Dry by Jane Harper

The Dry

The Dry is set in rural Australia. Federal Agent Aaron Falk returns to his hometown to mourn, and inevitably investigate, his best friend’s apparent murder-suicide. Falk is a regular guy, not a super-cop, his regular beat involves investigating financial crimes.

The setting looms large in this story, it’s a character in itself. The area is under a serious drought. Everyone is hurting. Everyone is on edge. It’s a small town. Everyone knows everyone’s business and can be very judgmental. Including a distrust of its hometown son: Aaron Falk.

The novel is well written with believable characters. Harper uses an interesting technique of italicized paragraphs to show glimpses of the past, as much of the story revolves around what happened to Falk to drive him away. The Mystery stays hidden until Harper decides to show it. (I’m not much of a mystery solver.)
An excellent first novel and a real page turner.
